PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is a format that allows authors and publishers to ensure documents will be viewed as intended, with images, text, fonts and layout intact regardless of which platform the user has installed (Windows, Mac, Linux or other operating system).

The only requirement to view PDF files is a PDF reader. Adobe Acrobat Reader is the most commonly used PDF reader and is often installed by hardware manufacturers to enable customers to access manuals. Chances are you already have it on your system, but if you don't, it is available for all major operating systems as a free download from the Adobe web site. Clicking the following link will open a new window and display the download page of Acrobat Reader. Follow the simple steps provided to download and install Reader.

Get Acrobat Reader

There are several ways to view the files:

  • View the file in browser window: Some browsers support the viewing of PDF files. If your browser is one of these, and you have Acrobat Reader installed, clicking on the links will open the PDF file in your browser window and add an extra toolbar with buttons to enable you to navigate and print the document. When you are finished, simply click the 'Back' button of your browser to return.

  • Open the file from current location: If your browser doesn't work like this, clicking the links will prompt you to 'Open file...' or 'Save file...' Choosing to open the file will open Acrobat Reader and display the file. For safety's sake, it is best to get into the habit of saving files and scanning them for viruses before opening them.

  • Save the file to disk: Also known as downloading, you can either left-click on the link and choose 'Save file...' or you can right-click and choose Save from the menu that appears. Either method will give similar results. You will be prompted to choose a folder to save the file in. You may use an existing folder, like My Documents, or you may make a new folder. When the download is finished, open the chosen folder and double-click the PDF file to view it in Reader.
