St Kilda Station Clock & Luggage Trolley

CLOCKING ON AT ST KILDA STATION

St Kilda Railway Station, the oldest suburban passenger railway station in Victoria, once boasted a chandelier. A fire over a decade ago destroyed much of the original building that was rebuilt in 1994 with funds from the Commonwealth and the former St Kilda Council.

Council staff were able to salvage the original station clock and a luggage trolley which were placed in storage for possible later use. Earlier this year, the clock was presented to the developer, R Corporation, on the proviso that it be appropriately restored and installed in a suitable location within the main hall of the station building. The development, a combined retail, restaurant and apartment complex known as the Metropol, is nearing completion.

The luggage trolley, which had sat in the basement car park of the St Kilda Library for years, has now also been returned to the station and will be used for display of flowers at the main Fitzroy Street entrance. It was not damaged in the fire and a light cleaning is all that has been needed to bring it back to its former glory.
