Newmarket Hotel 1868 -

36 Inkerman Street, St Kilda
MEL: 58 B10

Newmarket Hotel, 2004

This hotel, between St Kilda Road and Barkly Street, opened on Saturday 4 Apri1 1868. Its first licensee was John Hayes. The Newmarket still operates as a hotel. Until the closure of the Council Depot, opposite, in the early 1990s, it was a popular spot for its employees.

There has been a Hungarian presence in the hotel for many years.  In the early 1980s, its proprietor was Hungarian and created a Hungarian menu that exists today despite attempts over the years to alter the style of the hotel.  Boasting Hungarian cuisine, and featuring topless waitresses, Thursday night at the Newmarket Hotel is known colloquially as ‘Schnitz‘n’Tits’ night. In recent years, episodes of the television series Stingers and Halifax FP have been filmed at the hotel.  Due to the redevelopment of the area, which involves the mass construction of high-rise residential apartments, it is unlikely that the Newmarket Hotel will exist for much longer.
