The Star and Garter Hotel was originally a ten-roomed brick building and
bar built in 1877 on an allotment Henry James Kavenagh
had bought the previous year. Kavenagh had a livery
stables and hotel in Moray
Street, before transferring to
the Family Hotel. This pub was a South Melbourne institution until its
closure in 2000, and in 2003 is a block of residential apartments.
